The Iowa Roadie is getting old.
Ignore the telltale signs like my gray hair or the “oldies” stations playing music from my high school prom.
I knew I was old when given the choice to go out on a Saturday night or watch Dateline with a frozen pizza, I chose the option that allowed me to fall asleep on the couch by 8 pm.
With the cat on top of me.
And an empty bottle of Aldi’s mulled wine in the trash.
All of which indicate that the Iowa Roadie should resort to “day drinking.”
Google “day drinking.” Go ahead. I’ll wait.
This is what came up when I typed those words into the search bar…
Day drinking means you’ll likely be sipping for a much longer period of time than you would if you just had a few drinks at a bar after dinner. … (As a general guideline, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines moderate drinking as no more than three drinks per day for women.)
Who else feels that the cyber gods sound a little judgmental?
So judgmental, in fact, that I needed to know…is day drinking bad for me?
Here is Google’s response…
Daytime drinking may lead to impairment of awake functioning.
Impairment of AWAKE functioning. As opposed to…impairment of ASLEEP functioning? And seriously? Doesn’t NIGHT drinking also lead to impairment of awake functioning?
I remember my mother’s reasoning for an early curfew…Nothing good happens after dark. (Who else has used that logic with their own kids because you know EXACTLY what happens when the lights go down?)
Which circles the Iowa Roadie back to her original sentiment…DAY DRINKING is a viable option for AARP card-carrying members who turn into pumpkins before the nightly news airs. In other words…I’m just a modern-day Cinderella…minus the fairy godmother and Prince Charming. (No offense to the Iowa Roadie’s husband.)
In fact, the Iowa Roadie and husband have recently enjoyed some lovely day drinking excursions…even though the intent was not to “day drink.”
All excursions begin with a Purpose.
Case in point… Last weekend, the Iowa Roadie’s husband purchased 30 feet of television antenna in Spencer, Iowa…a mere 2.5 hours from our home. Five hours of quality “ride time” TOTALLY justifies a drink.
Maybe two.
So we found Weasy’s, a little bar on Main Street, serving breakfast. And cocktails. And enjoyed both…even though it was only noon. We then meandered down the street a bit, and found ourselves inside The Iowa Project.
The Iowa Project is a new brewery, opening a mere six months ago in June 2020. The owners are originally from Kansas City, but embarked on their brewing business in Iowa due to state incentives. They named their brewery “The Iowa Project” because the name they really wanted was already taken (who can relate to this luck?) AND because that’s literally what this endeavor was…an Iowa project.
And thank goodness, they chose the Hawkeye State. This is a brewery that offers selections such as a cherry limeade sour ale and a SoHo Raspberry Crumble. It’s like a fruit pie exploded!
(Did you know that the USDA recommends a minimum of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day?)
In addition to The Iowa Project, we stopped at The West End Pub in Emmetsburg to finish watching an Iowa basketball game AND The Wild Rose Casino where we gambled away way too much SoHo Raspberry Crumble beer money.
All this day drinking…and the Iowa Roadie was still home by 7 pm.
And on the couch in a state of asleep impairment by 8.
